How Therapy Works For You

Do you have more questions? See Emerald Counselling and Consulting’s FAQ page.

  • Going through counselling can be a challenging and emotional journey, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. It’s a collaborative effort between you and your counsellor as you work together to understand your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
  • Whether you prefer one-on-one sessions or group counselling, the goal is always to help you overcome obstacles and achieve your objectives. The duration of counselling can vary depending on your individual needs, but rest assured that your counsellor will work with you every step of the way. Remember, seeking counselling is a brave and positive step towards improving your mental health and overall well-being.
  • Counselling offers a confidential space to talk about your concerns and work towards making a meaningful change. It can be helpful for many issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, grief, trauma, transitions, and personal growth.
  • A safe and confidential space: Counselling provides a safe and confidential environment where you can openly discuss any concerns without fear, judgment, or repercussions. This secure setting allows you to express yourself freely, knowing that your privacy is respected.

  • A collaborative relationship: You and your counsellor will work together in a supportive partnership to identify the root cause of your concerns. Through open dialogue and mutual understanding, you will set meaningful goals for your therapy and develop a plan to achieve them. Over time, this collaboration can lead to lasting progress and personal growth.

  • An individualized approach: Because every individual is unique, your counsellor will tailor your therapy to meet your specific needs and concerns. By adapting strategies and techniques to your situation, they ensure that your counselling experience is both relevant and effective.

  • Active participation: Throughout your therapy sessions, it is essential for you to engage actively in the process. Your counsellor will encourage your participation, helping you apply what you learn to your everyday life. While progress may not be immediate, consistent effort outside of sessions—such as practicing new strategies and techniques—will contribute to meaningful change.

  • Evidence-based practices: To ensure you receive the most effective support, your counsellor will use evidence-based methods to help you navigate a variety of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, and relationship issues. These approaches are backed by research and have been proven to promote positive mental health outcomes.

  • New insights and skills: Engaging in counselling can be a valuable opportunity to gain deeper self-awareness and understanding of your emotions and behaviors. Additionally, you will learn new coping mechanisms that can help you manage your emotions and improve your mental well-being. Just as taking care of your physical health is essential, prioritizing your mental health is equally important in leading a balanced life.

  • Challenges and discomfort: While counselling can be transformative, it is not always easy. You may find yourself confronting difficult emotions and revisiting past experiences, which can be challenging and, at times, uncomfortable. However, your counsellor will be there to provide support, guidance, and encouragement to help you navigate these challenges as they arise.

Starting therapy can be a complex and emotional journey, which is why self-care is crucial throughout the process. It is important to acknowledge that things may feel more difficult before they improve, but with time, patience, and perseverance, positive change is possible.

With the guidance of a skilled counsellor and your own commitment to personal growth, you can work toward achieving your goals and living a happier, healthier life. While counselling may take time, every step you take brings you closer to the positive changes you seek. Remember to be kind to yourself, trust the process, and know that support is available to you every step of the way.
